The Baba House, located on Neil Road in Chinatown, is one of the last remaining Straits Chinese houses in Singapore. It was a gift to the NUS Museum from Mrs Agnes Tan, daughter of Malacca- born Peranakan statesman Tan Cheng Lock. Launched in September 2008 after intensive research and restoration work, the Baba House showcases with its furnishing, household materials and decorative features, the domestic space of a typical Straits Chinese family and encourages appreciation and interest into the Straits Chinese history, identity, iconography and architecture.
Today, the first and second floors of the building highlights the community's material culture during the first half of the 20th century while the third floor hosts temporary exhibitions.
In order to visit the Baba House, you need to join the 1- hour Heritage tours, which are held on Mondays 2pm, Tuesdays 6.30pm, Thursdays 10am and Saturdays 11am. It is free of charge but advanced booking is required. Each tour welcomes a maximum of 13 visitors and booking several weeks in advance is highly recommended.
