Singapore's rich history is a mosaic of diverse cultures, and the Hainanese community stands out as culinary trailblazers. Heard of the Singapore Sling and Chicken Rice? These were created by the enterprising Hainanese people! Join us on the Hainanese Migrants Journey to delve into their remarkable story, from their origins in Hainan Island, China, to their immigration to Singapore in the 1850s. What Awaits You: On this journey, you’ll explore Purvis Street and Liang Seah Street, where your guide will tell you stories of yesteryear. Listen to how the early migrants used to be packed into the two-story shophouses and hear about some of the stories of famous Hainanese people. We will make our way through the historic Raffles Hotel, which has stood on these grounds since 1887. You’ll be taken through a number of the famous spots within the hotel, like the Long Bar, a favorite spot for celebrities back in the old days (think patrons like Somerset Maugham) and where the Singapore Sling was invented. Finally, we’ll take a short walk away to enjoy classic Hainanese dishes. Your guide will leave you from here and you're free to peruse any other of our iconic Hainanese delicacies.
