Description
Step into Singapore’s most colourful heritage neighbourhood — Joo Chiat and Katong — and discover the world of the “Crazy Rich Asians” … before the movie.
Your experience begins at a private museum beautifully styled to look like a real home of Singapore’s old-money Peranakan families. The word “Peranakan” refers to descendants of Chinese traders who settled in the Malay Archipelago centuries ago and married local women. This union created a distinct hybrid culture known for its rich cuisine, ornate fashion, and elaborate homes that blended Chinese, Malay, and European influences.
Inside the musuem, admire exquisite furniture, beaded slippers, vibrant porcelain, and elegant décor that reflect how the wealthy Straits Chinese once lived in the early 1900s.
You’ll be guided through an intimate, museum-style showcase where you can see and touch authentic serving ware and table settings — including ceramics, glassware and dining pieces once used in an actual Peranakan household. Each object tells a story of refinement, wealth and cross-cultural artistry, from British-inspired silver trays to hand-painted nyonya ware passed down through generations.
After exploring, enjoy a tea experience — complete with colourful handmade local sweets that blend Chinese, Malay and colonial flavours. This elegant tea session evokes the refined hospitality that Peranakan families were famous for.
For those who wish, there’s an optional dress-up session where you can don the graceful sarong kebaya (traditional Peranakan outfit) and pose amid the ornate dining setting. The intricate embroidery, beaded shoes and pastel hues make for a truly memorable, photo-worthy experience that feels straight out of a “Crazy Rich Asians” scene. There is an optional kebaya rental (for both men and women) that you can add on during check out.
Leaving the mansion, stroll through Joo Chiat’s pastel-coloured shophouses and Koon Seng Road, learning how this neighbourhood became the heart of Singapore’s Peranakan heritage. Hear how these narrow, colourful homes were designed for neighbours to chat and trade, and discover the meaning behind the decorative tiles.
This boutique experience blends luxury, culture, and design — ideal for travellers who love history, storytelling, and beautiful photo opportunities in one of Singapore’s most picturesque districts.
